Welcome to Year 1

Mrs Greenslade and Mrs Emmett would like to welcome you to our Year One class page. Here you will find everything you need to know about life in Year One – who supports us, when we have PE and what we’re currently learning.
This year we are being supported by Mrs Raban.
PE
We have indoor PE on Wednesdays and outdoor PE on Fridays. On these days please ensure children are in school wearing correct kit ( plain white t-shirt and plain black bottoms and jumper.) On these days children should not have any jewellery on.
Reading
We change reading books on Thursday and Friday – once children have had the opportunity to be introduced to their book during our guided reading sessions. Please ensure that children place their bookbags in the bookbag box in our classroom on Thursday morning so that their books can be changed.
Autumn 2025
This first term in Year One is always an exciting one with lots going on.
In Phonics, we will recap all of the sounds learned in Reception before moving on to looking at the Phase Five alternative graphemes. You can find these on the right under phonics support.
In English, we will look at what a noun is and practise using precise nouns when speaking and writing. We will focus on accurate letter formation by learning all about handwriting families and we will use our phonics knowledge to spell words independently.
In Maths, we will be looking at Place Value to 10 before moving onto addition and subtraction to ten before moving on to place value to 20 just before Christmas. Alongside our maths lessons, we have daily fluency sessions where we practise counting and look at number bonds for the numbers to 10.
Below are some of the resources that we use to support our learning in maths and fluency.

Science – our first topics look at senses and then humans and animals.
Humanities – we begin with history looking at how Charnwood has changed since it opened it 1970. We then move on to looking at the Geography of the school and its local area. Look at birds eye view maps and creating our own plans of the school.
Computing – we look at what technology is and learning how to log in to a website, before moving on to creating digital art pieces.
Alongside all of this we will be drawing, painting, sculpting, singing, and playing to the beat using our bodies and percussion instruments.
To support your child’s learning at home this term, keep an eye on Class Dojo where we will share extra information about what we have been doing in class and links to things that children have enjoyed.
Learning at Home
1. Learn your phonics sound by practising what you learn in class each week at home. Practise listening to the sounds in words and thinking about how many sounds/syllables you hear and what those sounds are.
2. Read at least 3 times a week. We will send your child’s guided reading book home, so that they can continue to practise their fluency at home. Repeated practise helps improve recognition of sounds, blending confidence and accuracy and reading speed.
Don’t forget the many other opportunities to read whenever you can – cereal boxes, bus stops, adverts, shop windows! Read, read, read and listen to the adults model reading in your life.
3. Counting – Practise counting to twenty forwards and backwards. Starting from different numbers. Look for numbers when you’re out. Can you see them on shop fronts/ doors/ taxis ?
