At Charnwood Primary Academy, reading is a top priority and is a key driver for our curriculum. As a result, we have a Reading leadership team comprised of the English Lead, and a Phonics lead who is also EYFS lead. We follow the EYFS framework and the National Curriculum. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently and with confidence, in any subject, in their forthcoming secondary education.
We follow Letters and Sounds as a school because it aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children. The difference with Letters and Sounds to other programmes such as Read, Write Ink is that it gives us the flexibility to adapt the sessions to make them engaging, hand-on and very often linked to our themes.
We therefore intend to encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop: knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live; to establish an appreciation and love of reading; to gain knowledge across the curriculum; and develop their comprehension skills. We aim to provide vocabulary rich reading material and expose children to a variety of conversational vocabulary to subject specific terminology.
We teach comprehension skills from Y1 – 6 with the help of our Reading Dogs.
We have invested in Accelerated Reader for children from Years 3 – 6 (and some children in Year 1 and 2) which enables children to show their understanding of the texts they have read by answering quizzes. For children Year 2 and below, they will read books at home related to the phonics sounds they are working on. Children must read at least 3 times per week at home and read their book every day for 25 minutes in class.
