Welcome to Year 1

Mrs Greenslade and Mrs Tapper would like to welcome you to our Year One class page. Here you will find everything you need to know about life in Year One – who supports us, when we have PE and what we’re currently learning.
This year we are being supported by Mrs Raban.
PE
We have indoor PE on Wednesdays and outdoor PE on Fridays. On these days please ensure children are in school wearing correct kit ( plain white t-shirt and plain black bottoms and jumper.) On these days children should not have any jewellery on.
Reading
We change reading books on Thursday and Friday – once children have had the opportunity to be introduced to their book during our guided reading sessions. Please ensure that children place their bookbags in the bookbag box in our classroom on Thursday morning so that their books can be changed.
Spring 2026
This second term in Year One continues to build on what children learned during the Autumn term. It sees an increased level of independence in the children.
In Phonics, we will revisit the Phase Five alternative graphemes, which we met during the end of the Autumn Term. You can find these on the right under phonics support.
In English, we will revisit what nouns and verbs are and we will use them to write a simple sentences that included capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We will continue to focus on accurate letter formation and we will use our phonics knowledge to spell words independently. Some children will begin to apply the Phase Five alternative sounds in their writing.
In Maths, we will be looking at Place Value to 20 . Alongside our maths lessons, we have daily fluency sessions where we work on our knowledge of number, place value, and addition and subtraction.
Below are some of the resources that we use to support our learning in maths and fluency.

Science – we will begin by looking at seasonal change before moving on to materials.
Humanities – this half term we are doing history and we will be learning about changes in houses over the decades.
Computing – we will be working on our digital writing skills and learning how to use keys to edit our work.
Alongside all of this we will be drawing, painting, singing and dancing.
To support your child’s learning at home this term, keep an eye on Class Dojo where we will share extra information about what we have been doing in class and links to things that children have enjoyed.
Learning at Home
1. Learn your phonics sound by practising what you learn in class each week at home. Practise listening to the sounds in words and thinking about how many sounds/syllables you hear and what those sounds are.
2. Read at least 3 times a week. We will send your child’s guided reading book home, so that they can continue to practise their fluency at home. Repeated practise helps improve recognition of sounds, blending confidence and accuracy and reading speed.
Don’t forget the many other opportunities to read whenever you can – cereal boxes, bus stops, adverts, shop windows! Read, read, read and listen to the adults model reading in your life.
3. Counting – Practise counting to twenty forwards and backwards. Starting from different numbers. Look for numbers when you’re out. Can you see them on shop fronts/ doors/ taxis ?
