Mr Wilcock

Summer 1

History

This half term, Year 4 will explore prehistoric Britain, learning about how people lived long before written records began. This period is known as prehistory.

We will learn about three key periods:

  •  Stone Age – People were hunter-gatherers who used stone tools and gradually began farming.
  •  Bronze Age – Humans discovered how to make metal (bronze), leading to better tools, weapons and jewellery.
  •  Iron Age – Iron replaced bronze, farming improved and people lived in tribes, often building hillforts for protection.

Throughout the topic, pupils will:

  • Understand how life changed over time
  • Explore how people’s homes, tools and food developed
  • Learn how we know about the past using artefacts and archaeology
  • Build a timeline of prehistoric Britain

Length  Suppose             Possible              Various

Maths

Year 4 will be learning about fractions and decimals, developing their understanding of how numbers can be represented in different ways.

Children will learn to:

  • Recognise and write fractions (e.g. ½, ¼, ¾)

  • Place decimals on a number line and compare them

Science

We will be learning about habitats, exploring how living things depend on their environment to survive.

Children will learn to:

  •  Understand what a habitat is (a place where plants and animals live)
  •  Identify different types of habitats (e.g. forests, oceans, deserts, polar regions)

Spring 2

Maths

This half term, we will be continuing with our multiplication and division unit, then working on length and perimeter.

In June, we have our multiplication check so please use timestables.co.uk and TT Rockstars as much as possible.

Spelling

We will practise these spellings this half term:

Spring 1

PE is still on Tuesday and Thursday.

History

Maya

In history, we will learn about the ancient Maya civilisation, which lived in Central America over a thousand years ago. The Maya were skilled builders who created impressive stone cities, temples, and pyramids in the rainforest. They were also excellent mathematicians and astronomers, developing their own number system and calendar. By studying the Maya, we can learn how people lived in the past and how their beliefs, inventions, and way of life still interest historians today.

Science

Sound

In science, we will be learning about sound and how we hear it. We will explore how sounds are made by vibrations and how these vibrations travel through different materials such as air, water, and solids. We will investigate how sounds can be loud or quiet and high or low, and learn how to change the pitch and volume. By the end of the topic, we will understand how sound helps us communicate and stay safe in our everyday lives.

Autumn 2

PE this half term:

Tuesday = Dance in the hall

Thursday = Hockey outside

Science:

This half term we will will explore the different states of matter by investigating the properties of solids, liquids and gases. We will also observe how materials can change state when they are heated or cooled.

Geography: What is Lichfield Like?

Through the study of Lichfield and Staffordshire, we will learn to identify human and physical features, recognise geographical similarities and differences and understand how people and environments interact. We will use maps, atlases, and digital mapping tools whilst learning to interpret symbols, grid references, and the eight points of a compass.

Maths: Place Value and adding and subtracting

We will continue to use place value then move on to adding and subtracting.

English

In English we will be reading the Iron Man by Ted Hughes and use this incredible story to create our own version.  The grammar focus will be using direct speech.

History: The Anglo-Saxons!

This half term, our history topic takes us back over 1,500 years to the time of the Anglo-Saxons—a group of tribes from what is now Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands who sailed across the sea to settle in Britain after the Romans left.

The Anglo-Saxons built villages, farmed the land, and formed powerful kingdoms like Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria. They spoke Old English, worshipped gods like Woden and Thor, and later converted to Christianity. Their stories, battles, and discoveries—like the famous Sutton Hoo burial site—help us understand how England began to take shape.

Science: Electricity

In science lessons we will be learning about electricity and focusing on the life of Thomas Edison.

Maths: Shape

Focus Area What Pupils Do
Angles Identify, compare, and order acute/right/obtuse angles.
Triangles Classify, measure, label; compute perimeter.
Quadrilaterals Identify and compare properties of different types.
Polygons (5+ sides) Name, classify as regular/irregular, calculate sides/perimeter.
Symmetry Count and compare lines of symmetry.
