What We Are Learning This Half Term

English

This half term we will be studying The Café at the Edge of the Woods. Children will develop their reading and writing skills through recount writing, learning how to sequence events and include interesting details in their work.

Maths

We will be focusing on:

  • Shape
  • Place Value
  • Addition and Subtraction

Children will build confidence with number facts, counting and solving problems using practical resources and written methods.

Reading

Reading remains a key priority in Year 2. Children will take part in daily reading sessions to develop fluency, comprehension and a love of books. Please continue to read regularly at home and record this in your child’s reading diary.

Phonics and Spelling

Children will continue working on Phase 6 phonics, focusing on spelling patterns, suffixes and applying their phonics knowledge confidently in reading and writing.

Science

Our science topics this half term are:

  • Animals including Humans
  • Materials

Children will learn about what living things need to survive and investigate the properties of different materials.

History

In History we will be learning about Mary Seacole, exploring her life and the important contributions she made to healthcare and nursing.

Computing

Children will learn about Computing Systems and Networks, developing their understanding of information technology and how technology is used in everyday life.

PSHE

Our unit is My Healthy Self, where children will learn about keeping their bodies healthy through exercise, healthy eating, hygiene and emotional wellbeing.

RE

Our question this half term is: “Why do we need to give thanks?”

Children will explore how gratitude is shown within different faiths and communities.

How You Can Help at Home

You can support your child by:

  • Listening to them read regularly.
  • Practising number bonds to 10 and 20.
  • Encouraging them to discuss what they have been learning in class.
  • Supporting completion of any homework activities.

We look forward to an exciting and successful term in Year 2!
