At Charnwood we use synthetic systematic phonics to teach early reading and writing. You can find the phonics mats that we use in school on our Year 1 homepage. These show the spellings for each sound we learn.
For example, the words 'rain' 'day' and 'snake' contain the same sound (phoneme), but they each have a different spelling (grapheme) of that particular sound.
Below is a video to help anyone who is unfamiliar with Letters and Sounds. It shows the correct pronunciation of each phoneme (sound) as these differ from 'letter names' learned through the alphabet.
Your child can have a go at reading the words below. The words with an alien next to them are nonsense or pseudo-words and we sometimes call these 'alien words' in the classroom.
