Our curriculum has been created to meet the needs of all of our learners through broad, balanced and relevant learning opportunities. Our curriculum approach ensures we deliver an imaginative, constructive, and creative range of learning experiences for all pupils which is carefully planned to meet the requirements of the New National Curriculum.
Through challenging activities we aim to make links between individual subjects and apply them to our various topics.
Pupils are encouraged to think creatively and critically and to respect others and the environments in which they live. The curriculum enables pupils to develop their physical skills and promotes their personal and social well-being.
Through our curriculum we aim to stimulate the enjoyment of, and commitment to, learning as a means of encouraging the best possible progress and the highest attainment for all pupils, preparing them effectively for the next steps in their education. We strive to provide our learners with memorable learning experiences that will remain with them for life. As a result, we have chosen to follow the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum which sets out essential coverage, learning objectives and standards which are required for all subjects. Furthermore, it provides progress measures for all subjects including personal development. Follow the link here for Chris Quigley KS1 Curriculum Planners and KS2 Curriculum Planners.
One of the primary reasons why we have chosen to adopt this curriculum is because it emphasises the importance of developing the depth of children’s learning. In essence, this means providing children with increased cognitive challenge, allowing them to apply the skills which they have learnt independently in a range of contexts rather than moving them onto the next skill needlessly when they have not truly mastered it. Such thinking is encapsulated in the scenario below:
We want to challenge our children to become independent, well-round individuals who take ownership of their learning and become deep thinkers. Moreover, we want our children to be able to apply their knowledge and skill set in a range of contexts within school and real life.
We complete daily phonic lessons throughout early years and KS1 and into KS2 following the Letters and Sounds scheme/document published by the Department for Education and Skills. Through this systematic programme we aim to prepare children to learn to read fluently by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.
Our teaching of reading is based on decodable phonics books (where all books are graded by level of phonics) that provide children with an extensive range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry books from various schemes with the recognised schemes of Rigby and Oxford Reading Tree being incorporated where appropriate. As the children move to stage 6 in phonics we spend time weekly teaching discreet grammar lessons following No Nonsense grammar from Babcock. At this point children move onto the reading scheme Accelerated Reader. They then follow this throughout the rest of their schooling at Charnwood.
